VC-Edition

 PUBLISHING SERIES

The VC-Edition is a teaching and research publication concept in the subject area of Visual Communication that focuses on the intersection of theory and practice of design, branding, and writing. The series aims at spreading knowledge and awareness through written and visual content, transforming information units into editorial formats. We are happy to announce the release of the latest two publications Dinge Zeichnen and Seeing Vol. 1.

VC-Edition No. 12 – Dinge Zeichnen VC-Edition No. 12 – Dinge Zeichnen

Our study material consists of “things” – objects from our everyday life. These objects, whether curious, unremarkable, mundane, beloved, or despised, captivate us in diverse ways. Central to our exploration is the question of perception: How and why do we see things? Our focus in drawing is on the implementation of ideas and the exploration of concepts such as reduction, abstraction, and transformation. Alex Hanimann delved into these investigations with the first-semester BA students in the drawing module. The publication Dinge Zeichnen compiles a selection of objects that were created during the last 10 years of Alex Hanimann’s drawing course.

Seeing Vol. 1

Seeing Vol. 1

Seeing Volume 1 deals with images of abjectness, horror and the otherworldly, featuring essays and observations made by students of the MA in Visual Communication at Zurich University of the Arts in response to two seminars on Visual Culture held by Björn Franke and Annamaria Vasvari. These responses are contextualized by a short story by artist and filmmaker Noam Toran and an interview by designer Romy Strasser with Andreas Fischer, an expert on paranormal images.

Limbo Prague
EXPEDITION 5TH SEMESTER (BA)
Our limbo expeditions to sundry cities highly depend on our established local networks. During this year’s expedition to Prague, the 5th semester BA students were welcomed by Jan Novak, a well-connected type designer. So it was obvious that we would focus on Prague’s historically very independent and diverse typographic work.

A Limbo Trip is more than a school trip or a city break. We want to look under the skin of an urban organism, make cross-connections in side streets and back alleys, look into backyards and wander through suburban spaces. Brim-full with historical and urbanistic inputs, carefully selected stopovers and diverse archive and studio visits, these six days gave us an insight not only into local design and creative cultures, but also the backgrounds and living conditions of various personalities. And, of course, we take these impressions and inspirations back to our own workshops.

A special thanks goes to Radek Sidun for providing us with valuable tips prior to our Limbo Trip in Prague. His insights greatly enhanced our experience!
