Information Day Special: Our Students Guide to Zurich
|
ONLY THE ESSENTIALS
|
Welcome to Zurich, the city where student budgets are put to the test. In this insightful guide, our students unveil their top recommendations and essential spots for aspiring designers and friends of Visual Communication attending our Open Day in Zurich. Are you a first-time visitor to our city and don’t know where to go on a small budget? Don’t worry. Our students have you covered.
5.K01
The code, puzzling at first, soon becomes a regular part of the routine. The "Basics of Typography" module kicks off the use of this space. Afterwards, it might seem like a relief, but the "Chamber of Horrors" keeps coming back every semester, and it's where we always keep in touch.
Piazza Cella
A bustling meeting point on Langstrasse, where enjoying street beer is a must. Piazza Cella, a cozy square nearby, offers a relaxed atmosphere for social gatherings and unwinding with friends.
Oberer/Unterer Letten
is the place you don’t want to miss during summer. In fact, it draws you in by itself. Before you know it, you're drifting along the relaxiing currents of the Limmat.
Mehrspur
Feeling thirsty? ZHdK has got you covered. The bar located just below our viscom atelier is always available, particularly during the happy hour (your wallet will thank you). A cold beer after a challenging yet rewarding day of layout design? Can't go wrong with that, am I right?
Club Zukunft
The Viscom Temple: Zukunft, also known as Zucki, is the spot where we celebrate, a.k.a. party, after surviving yet another draining module. It's the ideal place to unwind and let loose after all the hard work.
Frauenbadi/Männerbad
For a delightful and secluded stay, we recommend the Frauenbadi/Männerbadi. Situated in stunning locations between Limmat and Lake Zurich. Are you intrigued?
Kunsthaus
The Kunsthaus is the real deal. While Wednesdays offer free entrance to the collection, for us ZHdK students, it’s free every day. ;)
We highly recommend visiting this place to wander through the diverse art pieces, daydream, and catch their fantastic exhibitions. Don't miss out on the delicious coffee and drinks available at the Kunsthaus bar as well. |

Hyperimages explores the concept of “hyper” in relation to current visual phenomena: the excessive, heightened, multidimensional nature of how images are often produced, consumed or displayed today.
Based on a series of discussions, readings, museum visits and visual analysis around the idea of the hyperimages, we aimed essentially at touching some of the following questions: can we see something anew about the relationship between us and the visual, between the visual and reality, between reality and us?
|
|
|
The publication highlights the complexity of image assemblages in digital spaces, illustrating the varying dimensions where these visuals exist, from curated Instagram feeds to intricate hyperlinking across platforms. Developed from a seminar and a workshop led by Björn Franke, Annamaria Vasvari, Isabel Seiffert, and Christoph Miler, this collaborative effort offers diverse insights into visual communication.

FORM #1: FORMSWISS
|
As we’re looking back on a long-standing friendship with the design platform Form, founded by Arata Maruyama, who visited ZHdK in 2019 when he met with our faculty members to conduct insightful interviews with Sarah Owens, Jonas Voegeli and Cybu Richli, we mark the end of the touring exhibition, Form #1: FormSWISS. After a thrilling three-year tour in Japan, the exhibition found its final stop in Switzerland on October 20th.
Showcasing the contemporary landscape of Swiss visual communication, the exhibition ran from 2020 to 2022, providing a comprehensive view of the field. Curated by Murata's Tokyo-based visual communication design studio &Form, it debuted on September 21st, running for a month to celebrate the current state of Swiss visual communication. It featured remarkable pieces by our students and educators among other notable personalities in Swiss visual communication design. |
